Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature Preferably Land O'Lakes for creamy texture
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed Light or dark works, but dark gives a richer flavor
  • 2/3 cup corn syrup Light corn syrup is best for gooey texture
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder Ghirardelli or Hershey's for rich flavor
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Use pure vanilla for authentic taste
  • 9 cups puffed wheat Choose a minimally processed brand for best texture

Instructions

Preparation

  • Grease a 9×13 inch baking pan and set it aside, consider using parchment paper for easier removal.
  • In a large pot over medium-low heat, combine the butter, brown sugar, corn syrup, and cocoa powder. Stir gently until melted and mixed, then bring to a gentle simmer for about 1 minute.
  • Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract immediately.
  • Add the puffed wheat and mix until all pieces are thoroughly coated.
  • Pour the mixture into the prepared baking pan and press it down gently with a greased spatula.
  • Allow cooling for about an hour before cutting into squares.

Notes

For the best texture, store at room temperature in an airtight container. These squares freeze exceptionally well—consider making a double batch.
