Ingredients

Puff Pastry and Filling

  • 2 sheets puff pastry sheets (10 by 10 inches) Use high-quality butter puff pastry for best results.
  • 1/2 cup Nutella Can substitute with chocolate spread or almond butter.
  • 1 large egg Egg wash for a golden color; substitute with unsweetened almond milk for vegan.
  • 1 tablespoon water To mix with egg for the egg wash.
  • to taste Icing sugar Optional for dusting.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • Defrost the puff pastry as per the package instructions and transfer one sheet onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  • Melt the Nutella using a double boiler or microwave (for about 20 seconds) until it’s easy to spread.
  • Spread a generous layer of Nutella onto the first puff pastry sheet and carefully place the second sheet on top, smoothing it to eliminate air bubbles.
  • Cut the combined sheets into a large triangle and use the scraps to cut out small star shapes for decoration.
  • Pinch the edges of the triangle together to seal the layers and cut zigzag lines to form branches; twist each branch.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and water, then brush the mixture over the tree and the star shapes.

Baking

  • Bake for about 20-25 minutes or until deep golden brown.
  • Once out of the oven, let cool slightly and dust with icing sugar before serving.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. Can prepare and freeze unbaked, brushing with egg wash before baking directly from the freezer.
