  • 5 large eggs, separated Room temperature eggs work best for more volume in your cake.
  • 1 cup sugar, divided Granulated sugar for the batter and more for the meringue.
  • 0.25 cup milk Whole milk for richness.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Always choose pure vanilla extract for the best flavor.

Soaking Mixture

  • 1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
  • 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
  • 0.5 cup Nutella Use a high-quality brand for that signature flavor.

Topping

  • 1 cup heavy cream For a dreamy topping.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract For whipped topping.
  • Chocolate shavings or cocoa powder Adds a beautiful finish.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
  • In a bowl, combine 1 cup all-purpose flour, 1.5 teaspoons baking powder, and 0.25 teaspoon salt. Set aside.
  • In a separate mixing bowl, beat the 5 large egg yolks with 0.75 cup sugar until pale and creamy. Then mix in 0.25 cup milk and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract until well combined.
  • Gradually fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until just combined.
  • In another bowl, beat the 5 egg whites until soft peaks form, then gradually add the remaining 0.25 cup of sugar and continue to beat until stiff peaks form. Gently fold the egg whites into the batter.

Baking

  • Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Once cooled for about 10 minutes, use a fork to poke holes all over the cake.

Soaking

  • In a bowl, whisk together 1 can evaporated milk, 1 can sweetened condensed milk, and 0.5 cup Nutella until well combined. Pour this mixture evenly over the cake, ensuring it seeps into the holes. Let it soak for at least 2 hours in the fridge, ideally overnight.

Topping

  • For the whipped topping, whip 1 cup heavy cream until soft peaks form. Add 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and continue to whip until stiff peaks form.
  • Spread the whipped cream over the top of the cake and garnish with chocolate shavings or a dusting of cocoa powder before serving.
  • Chill until ready to serve.

Notes

Allowing the cake to soak overnight intensifies the flavors. Store leftover cake in the fridge covered tightly or in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
