Ingredients

For the Cookie Dough

  • 1.5 cups unsalted butter, room temperature Make sure the butter is soft to achieve that light and fluffy texture.
  • 2 cups powdered sugar This adds sweetness and helps the cookies to remain soft.
  • 2 whole eggs They provide moisture and help bind everything together.
  • 2 tbsp milk Adds richness for a tender cookie.
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract Any quality brand will do, but pure vanilla provides a deeper flavor.
  • 1 tsp almond extract This optional extract brings a lovely hint of nuttiness.
  • 3.5 cups all-purpose flour Be sure to spoon and level your flour for accuracy.
  • 0.5 tsp salt A must for balancing the sweetness!

For Coloring and Garnish

  • Gel food coloring (purple and black) Use a reputable brand for vibrant colors.
  • 0.5 cups purple and black sprinkles For garnish, adding that extra whimsical element.
  • 0.5 cups dark or chocolate sprinkles To contrast beautifully against the lighter dough.

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter and powdered sugar together until light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.
  • Add the eggs and milk, mixing until combined and smooth (about 1-2 minutes).
  • Gradually add the flour, salt, vanilla extract, and almond extract, stirring until it forms a soft dough. Do not over-mix.
  • Divide the dough into three portions: leave one uncolored, tint one with purple food coloring, and the other with black. Mix until colors are vibrant.

Cookie Assembly

  • Roll the black dough into a 6x12 inch rectangle on a floured surface. Do the same with the white dough, layer it on top of the black, and roll them together.
  • Roll out the purple dough to the same size, sprinkle with purple sprinkles, and place it on top. Roll the entire dough into a log, pressing slightly to ensure it sticks.
  • Wrap the log in plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for about 45 minutes.

Baking

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Slice the chilled log into ¼-inch thick rounds and place them on lined baking sheets.
  • Bake for 12-15 minutes, until the edges are lightly golden.
  • Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack.

Notes

These cookies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for 3-4 days. You can also refrigerate for up to a week or freeze the log of dough for up to 2 months.
