Ingredients

For the Cake

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour Use high-quality flour for the best texture. (Recommendation: King Arthur Flour)
  • 1.5 cups granulated sugar This adds sweetness and helps with browning.
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt Enhances flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder Helps the cake rise.
  • 0.5 teaspoon baking soda Works with the acidic buttermilk for leavening.
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Room temperature butter makes for easy creaming.
  • 4 large eggs Bring them to room temperature for better incorporation.
  • 1 cup buttermilk Adds moisture and a slight tang.
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract For that classic flavor.

For the Glaze

  • 0.5 cup powdered sugar Essential for that smooth, sweet glaze.
  • 0.25 cup milk To achieve the right consistency.
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter Adds richness and flavor.
  • 0.25 cup bourbon A delightful twist for those who want a bit of extra warmth! (optional)

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 325°F (165°C). Grease and flour a bundt pan to prevent sticking.
  • Combine Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, and baking soda.
  • Cream the Butter: In another bowl, cream softened butter until light and fluffy—about 3-4 minutes with an electric mixer.
  • Incorporate Eggs: Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  • Add Dry & Wet Ingredients: Alternately add the flour mixture and buttermilk to the butter mixture, starting and ending with flour. Stir in vanilla extract.
  • Pour Batter: Pour the batter into the prepared bundt pan, smoothing the top with a spatula.

Baking

  • Bake: Bake the cake for 50-60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Prepare the Glaze: In a saucepan over medium heat, combine butter, milk, and powdered sugar. Stir until melted and smooth. Mix in bourbon if desired.
  • Glaze the Cake: Once the cake is out of the oven, cool for 10 minutes before drizzling the glaze on top.
  • Serve & Enjoy: Allow to cool completely before slicing and serving.

Notes

Store the cake at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 3 days. It freezes well for up to 3 months. Variations can include adding nuts or chocolate chips to the batter.
