Ingredients

Base Ingredients

  • 1 box Saltine Crackers Use fresh, non-cracked crackers for the best texture.
  • 1 cup Butter Opt for unsalted butter for better control over saltiness. Use room temperature butter.
  • 1 cup Brown Sugar Light brown sugar works best for caramel-like flavor. Coconut sugar is an alternative.
  • 2 cups Chocolate Chips Semi-sweet chocolate chips are classic, but dark or mint chocolate can be used.

Optional Toppings

  • 1 cup Nuts Chopped pecans or walnuts for extra crunch, or leave out for a nut-free version.
  • 1/2 cup Candy Canes Crushed for a festive touch.
  • 1 teaspoon Sea Salt Sprinkle on top to balance the sweetness.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil.
  • Arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer on the baking sheet.

Cooking

  • In a saucepan, melt the butter and brown sugar over medium heat, stirring until the mixture bubbles and turns caramel color. Boil for 3 minutes without stirring.
  • Pour the caramel mixture over the saltines, quickly spreading it evenly.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 5-7 minutes until bubbly and golden brown.
  • Remove from oven and immediately sprinkle chocolate chips on top. Let sit to melt, then spread the chocolate evenly.
  • Add optional toppings while the chocolate is still melty.
  • Refrigerate until set (about 30-60 minutes) then break into pieces.
