Ingredients

Base Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter Use high-quality butter like Kerrygold for the best flavor. It's essential to use unsalted butter to control saltiness.
  • 4 cups powdered sugar Make sure to sift it to avoid lumps!
  • 1/4 cup milk Whole milk will give a richer frosting; dairy-free options like almond or oat milk can be used.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Choose pure vanilla extract for depth of flavor.
  • 1 pinch salt Helps to balance the sweetness.

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir frequently for about 5-7 minutes until it turns golden brown and smells toasted. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the browned butter with the sifted powdered sugar, milk, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt.
  • Using an electric mixer, beat on medium speed for about 3-5 minutes until smooth and creamy. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as necessary.
  • If the frosting is too thick, add a little more milk, one tablespoon at a time. If it's too runny, mix in more powdered sugar.
  • Use immediately to frost cakes, cupcakes, or bars.

Notes

Store leftover frosting in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week. Re-whip to restore fluffiness before use. The frosting may also be made a day in advance.
